Business Model Template – designing your competitve edge

Alexander Osterwalder

Update: Business Model Innovation Book. We are currently writing a groundbreaking book on business model innovation (publication: June 2009). You can get special privileges and participate in the innovative business model of our book project on our book chunk platform

Today I read a blogpost by Steve Portigal on design and business and discovered a great new tool to upload, store and share powerpoint presentations on the web.

I immediately used it to share a deck of slides I designed to outline the business model concept. The slides briefly outline my understanding of what a business model actually is and how the concept can be used as a business model design template to quickly design and describe the business logic of a company. The template can also be applied together with the business model innovation cycle which I described in an earlier post.

The slides come under a creative commons license and I actively encourage their re-use – as long as the author (alex osterwalder) is mentioned and the license is respected. I’m also interested in your feedback if you’ve applied the template or plan to apply it (email me at my new company: osterwalder(-at-)gmail.com).

    hi ,

I am trying to use the Business Model Template to understand a Recruitment Agency’s Business. I have taken a view point that Agency is in the business of selling jobs .The companies which have job vacancies are the suppliers. The employees seeking jobs are the customers. The difficulty i am facing is to apply value proposition to the supplier’s side . In this case the supplier is equally important than the Customer. Should i consider taking ‘Brokerage view ‘ of the business ? In this case as well the template is not easily applicable. Please Help !!

    Hi Tazeen,

The brokerage view is indeed the right approach. I would have modelled this business case with two value propositions for two different customer segments. One value proposition for organizations seeking employees and one value proposition for job seekers. The revenue stream would come from the former…

    Best regards,
    Alex

For some reason your authorship attribution vanished from Wikipedia, as well as some other stuff…

I can see why the history-like beginning should be in a different section; or the example quote of an informal business model might be distracting and not representative (do we want to quote all now?); but I think the reference model itself should be represented correctly.

Maybe you can have a look over the edits I did, as I ca

I enjoyed the information on your Blog, and I have watched the slideshow. However, as others have noted, it is quite small. Is there a way to either have the slideshow bigger, or post the actual slides? Perhaps as a locked PDF?

Thanks, keep you the great work!

For those who are struggling with the small size of slideshow.. if you’re running internet explorer 7 you can magnify any webpage upto 200% using the menu in the bottom right hand corner of your web browser.

Alex, your method for articulating business models is second to none. The way you demonstrate this through the practical application of YOU as a business is an excellent complement to the content you provide your fans. Thanks again for continuing to look at this age old problem with new and creative lenses. –Jeff
